The Honest Woodcutter সত্‍্যবাদী কাঠুরে

Once upon a time, there was a poor woodcutter who lived near a forest. Every day, he went to the forest to cut wood and sold it to earn money.

এক দেশে এক গরিব কাঠুরে ছিল, যে জঙ্গলের পাশে থাকত। প্রতিদিন সে জঙ্গলে যেত কাঠ কাটতে এবং তা বিক্রি করে টাকা রোজগার করত।

One day, while cutting a tree beside a river, his axe slipped from his hand and fell into the deep water.

একদিন সে নদীর ধারে গাছ কাটছিল। হঠাৎ তার কুড়ালটি হাত থেকে পড়ে গিয়ে গভীর পানিতে ডুবে গেল।

The woodcutter became very sad. He had no money to buy another axe.

কাঠুরে খুবই দুঃখ পেল। তার আরেকটা কুড়াল কেনার মতো টাকাও ছিল না।

Suddenly, a water fairy appeared. She asked, “Why are you crying?”

হঠাৎ, জলের পরী এসে জিজ্ঞাসা করল, “তুমি কাঁদছো কেন?”

The woodcutter told her everything.

কাঠুরে সব কথা বলল।

The fairy dived into the water and brought out a golden axe. “Is this yours?” she asked.

পরী পানিতে ডুব দিয়ে একখানা সোনার কুড়াল বের করল। “এটা কি তোমার?” সে জিজ্ঞাসা করল।

“No,” said the woodcutter. “That is not mine.”

“না,” কাঠুরে বলল। “ওটা আমার নয়।”

Then she brought out a silver axe. Again she asked, “Is this yours?”

তারপর সে একখানা রূপার কুড়াল বের করল। আবার জিজ্ঞাসা করল, “এটা কি তোমার?”

“No,” said the woodcutter again.

“না,” আবার কাঠুরে বলল।

Finally, she brought out the iron axe. The woodcutter said happily, “Yes! That is mine.”

শেষে সে লোহার কুড়াল বের করল। কাঠুরে খুশি হয়ে বলল, “হ্যাঁ! ওটাই আমার।”

The fairy was pleased with his honesty. She gave him all three axes as a reward.

পরী তার সততার জন্য খুশি হলো। সে পুরস্কার হিসেবে তিনটি কুড়ালই কাঠুরেকে দিয়ে দিল।

The woodcutter went home happily.

কাঠুরে খুশি হয়ে বাড়ি ফিরে গেল।
